Handwriting Recognition

A

Anthony Cheung

Hi

I've turned on the handwriting recognition feature in
Office XP. For English, I automatically got the writing
pad, write anywhere support. When I tried to add the
Chinese (Taiwan) handwriting support, only the drawing
pad is available.

Is there anything else I need to do to get the writing
pad support for traditional Chinese character recognition?

Thanks

Anthony

Hi Antony,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated, you would like to use
handwriting recognition with tranditional chinese.

To do so, you may need to add East Asian languages.

If the East Asian languages are not displayed in the "Input language" list
when you click Add in "Text Services and Input Languages" (click Start,
click Control Panel, click "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options",
click "Regional and Language Options", and then click Details on the
Languages tab), the fonts for the languages may not be installed. To
resolve this issue, install the East Asian language files.

To add handwriting recognition as a text service, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click "Date, Time, Language, and
Regional Options", and then click "Regional and Language Options".

2. Click the Languages tab.

3. Under "Text services and input languages", click Details.

4. Under "Installed services", click Add.

5. In the "Input language" list, click the language for which you want to
add handwriting recognition.

6. Click to select the "Handwriting recognition" check box.

7. Click the handwriting program that you want to use, and then click OK.
If you want to add additional handwriting programs, click Add, click to
select the "Handwriting recognition" check box, click the handwriting
program that you want, and then click OK. Click OK twice more. Handwriting
recognition is added as a text service for the language that you specified.

Hi Cherry

Thanks for the quick response. Actually, I did all the
set up. When I add the text service, I can see the
Handwriting recognition enabled for the Traditional
Chinese. The only problem is that only Drawing Pad is
available, no Writing Pad and Write Anywhere.

Thanks

Anthony

Hi Cherry

Thanks for your reply. When I check on the "Office XP
Tool: Global IME (Traditional Chinese)", it has the
statement: "Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000,
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT". Window XP is not
mentioned. I'm using Window XP, shall I still install the
package?

Thanks

Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated, only Drawing Pad is
available, no Writing Pad and Write Anywhere.

Regarding this issue, we suggest you download and install "Office XP Tool:
Global IME (Traditional Chinese)"

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? FamilyID=959EB2A2-FAC3-4443-
999B-8BE12734A596&displaylang=en

Test the Handwriting Recognition again after you install the package.

After our further research, we found this issue can be caused by other
third party text program installed on your computer.
- Text Bridge Pro 9.0
- Text Bridge Pro Millennium 9.5
For more information about Text Bridge, browse to the following ScanSoft
Web site:
http://www.scansoft.com

To work around this problem, disable Instant Access that was installed by
your Text Bridge program. To do this, follow these steps.

For Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and
Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type MSCONFIG and then
click OK.

2. On the Startup tab, click to clear the Instant Access check box, and
then click OK.
NOTE: On the General tab, Windows automatically selects the Selective
Startup option.

3. Click Yes to restart your computer.

For Microsoft Windows 2000

1. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type Regedt32 and then
click OK.

2. Select the following key in the Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
ent Version\Run

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the posting again. I understand you are using XP. Actually,
we have tested the Global IME on Windows XP machine and it can still run
correctly. Therefore, you can have a try.

Hope this helps and answers your question. If anything is unclear, please
let me know.

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the posting again. As you indicated after installing the
Global IME for Traditional Chinese, the handwriting recognition check box
is grayed out.

Regarding the current situation, we suggest you uninstall the Global IME
for Traditional Chinese from Add/Remove Programs.

We performed further research and testing on this issue.

This is because the option for the handwriting tools in Chinese is only
available from the Office Language Packs which are only available to
Enterprise customers.

There is no resolution to this problem for a non-enterprose customer. You
will have to look for third party workarounds.

For your convenience, I proformed further research and here are a few
alternatives:

Motorola has a product called WisdomPen

<http://www.sirius.com/~pacrim/wisdompen.html>

Here is a software company that specializes in all types of Asian software,
called AsiaSoft:

<http://www.asiasoft.com/english/index.html>

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear or if there is anything further we can help you with
from our side, please let me know.
