hanging indent lost after footnotes - Word XP

There seems to be a bug that I just can't figure out. I'm using bulleted
lists and footnotes, and at the end of the page after the footnotes when the
bulleted list is supposed to carry over formatting to the next page, it
doesn't. The settings for hanging indent etcetera are all where they're
supposed to be.

In one case it loses the hanging indent entirely, so that the remainder of
the bullet point is flush left.

In another case it treats the remainder of the bulleted list as a new
paragraph, with the first line flush left and the rest is indented
appropriately.

Any solutions?

Thank you in advance.

I strongly doubt this has anything to do with footnotes. If you use Normal
View instead of Page Layout, it will be very clear that the notes and the
text do not interfere with each other. Also turn on non-printing characters
(click ¶ on standard toolbar) so you can see what is really going on. I
wonder if you are putting in random enters to negotiate the page break. Try
typing it in Normal View and not worrying about where the page break comes,
and see what Word does with it then.
