Hangs when opening docs

Just a little background, when I first installed Word 97
the computer would hang when I was opening or searching
for a file unless I was online.(by hang I mean it wasn't
locked up, but took an awfull long time for the icons to
show up). For the past couple of days even when I'm
online it's hanging up.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions,

Make sure that under Tools, Options, File Locations tab, any networked paths
are using UNC paths and not mapped drives.

Additionally, check what is listed default folder when you do a File, Open.
If there is a web link or strange shortcut in the folder, this will cause
slow opening.
