Have unregistered offfice 97 can I use upgrade 2003 office

Trying to save money by buying upgrade 2003 office instead of full load but
my office 97 is no longer registered. Can I buy and upgrade if unregistered
or must I delete 97 and buy brand new setup 2003 office? thanks Ken
