Having a problem with Word being sluggish

Good afternoon,
I've got an issue with an install of Office 2003, and specifically Word
2003. What's going on is, the user is trying to both and and save data to a
USB jump drive, however when he accesses the menu (so File -> Open or File ->
Save as) the application will freeze up for a brief period before finally
opening the drop down list. Once the drop down actually appears he is able
to read/write data to any folder or to his jump drive without issue. This
occurs everytime he goes to open or save a file. To add insult to injury
this issue just started to occur this morning.

Any idea on where I might begin to look to fix this issue?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

This is EXACTLY what the issue was and I didn't realize it until I was on my
way back up to begin working on the issue by disconnecting all USB devices.
Network drives just slipped my mind until the elevator door opened. Thanks
for the response, it was on the mark.
