Having Huge problems with Entourage X Exchange server edition

I have tried to have a really positive attitude towards this product, but
even I (who is legendary for seeing the glass as half full as opposed to
half empty) have reached the end of my tether.

I have used Entourage X since the first release - pre-Exchange server
edition days I mean. I have had absolutely no problems with it when it did
not support Exchange Server connections. I have multiple pop accounts set
up in it and multiple subfolders, and lots of rules, lots of categories,
lots of entries in the address book, etc. Entourage has worked flawlessly.
It still works flawlessly providing I do not have an Exchange Server account
in Entourage.

I was using Outlook 2001 in Classic as it was the only way to work within
our collaborative environment against our Exchange server. That worked OK,
but the shortcomings of it, such as not being able to synchronise with a
Palm, collaborative tasks, and other features available in the Windows
Outlook client left us somewhat flat. Synchronising with a Palm was the
biggest issue.

With the release of Entourage 10.1.4 we thought that a great leap forward
had been taken. However, I have experienced a HUGE amount of problems with
Entourage 10.1.4, that has lead me to abandon it for connecting with the
Exchange server. I am wondering if anyone else is having the same problems.

My problem is that Entourage crashes. It crashes for no reason. All I get
is the dreaded beach ball, and when I click on the Entourage icon in the
dock, the pop-up menu shows that Entourage is not responding, and the only
option is to Force Quit.

I have trashed Office X, and reinstalled a clean copy, updating through 10.2
then 10 4. Nothing improved.

I have deleted my Exchange Account in Entourage more times than I care to
remember, and then had the dubious pleasure of synchronising everything in
every folder again, and again, and again... It keeps things stable for a
few days if I am lucky, but lately it lasts less than a day before the whole
thing crashes. Currently it lasts less than 10 minutes before crashing.

I have tried creating a new identity, about 4 times now. I have even
created a new identity without any POP accounts in it to keep it "clean" and
restrict any problem solving to just what is coming from the Exchange
Server. Entourage still crashes, with the dreaded beach ball.

However, one interesting thing I noted in the new identity: Contacts on the
Exchange Server are not synchronising to Entourage. No matter how long I
leave it (until it crashes at least) the ONLY record in my address book is
my own name, being the one that you are asked to enter when you create the
new identity. So, is this a clue? Could there be some reason why the names
in the Address Book don't synchronise? Is this where things are choking?

Another clue: When I open Outlook Web Access (in Safari, no less), I can
see most things, but not ALL things. There are some emails that when I
click on them in OWA, they come up with a "Page Missing" error in the
subsequent web page. Yet I can see these messages if I open up Outlook
2001. They display quickly clearly, with all content.

I had wondered if the fact that I could not see some emails (for example) in
OWA in Safari was due to Safari, so I tried Internet Explorer v5.2.3, but it
also has the identical problems. Could this be a problem with the WebDAV
service or similar? Remember that all these messages are OK in Outlook
2001.

A few other points that may help someone with more knowledge than me: The
synchronisation of my Calendar, after creating a new account, takes place in
a remarkably short period of time, like less than 30 seconds. The same with
updating the folder list, and downloading emails in the folders. I have
about 25 subfolders in my Inbox.

I've had problems with changes that I've made appearing incorrectly in my
Exchange calendar, so that Outlook users don't see the same things that I
see. I have subsequently deleted my Exchange account in Entourage, then
deleted all events in my calendar, rebuilt the datafile, then created a new
account in Entourage, so that the calendar is forced to start with nothing
in it. Once I do that, everything in the calendar appears correctly. I've
also reset the Synchronisation in the Exchange Account, but that was not as
successful. The only thing that guaranteed the correct info was deleting
all calendar events before creating a new Exchange account.

Weird but true file: There's a difference in the size of the icons for the
Mail, calendar, Address Book, Notes, Tasks, and Custom views icons in my
"old" identity and my New identity. The icons in my old identity are much
smaller than my new identity. I can't find a way of changing the size of
them, so I'm wondering if there is some significant difference in the two
identity files... (Probably can't see the wood for the trees at this stage).
However, no matter which identity I set the Exchange account up in, I still
get Entourage crashing.

I'm really stuck and exhausted after doing battle with this thing. I had
thought that perhaps it had to do with my hard drive, permissions, etc, but
after making sure that everything was repaired, and working properly, I
still have Entourage crashing.

I'm based in Sydney, Australia, so I doubt anyone from Microsoft's Mac BU
would drop in for a cup of coffee accompanied by the appropriate remedy, but
I'm willing to be surprised. As an alternative, I'd just love to have some
helpful suggestions, outside of what I have tried already.

BTW, as you can imagine its taken a while to type this email, and as I have
deleted the Exchange Account in this identity, Entourage has not crashed.
In the other brand new identity, with only an Exchange account in it,
Entourage crashes inside of 2 minutes.

Dazed, confused, and totally disillusioned.
