Having trouble accessing newsgroups.

Desert Dweller

I set up Entourage to receive E-mail and I am able to access Microsoft
newsgroups, but I can't access other newsgroups. I followed the
instructions setting up my newsgroup account with Entourage, including
putting in the receiving news server address, E-mail address and
password. I keep getting this message:

"The server for account “Usenet newsgroups account” returned the error
“Authentication Failed”. Your username/password or security settings
may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?"

Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, I'm accessing this newsgroup through Google.

Diane,
Your message is correct if Desert Dweller is having trouble with the Microsoft newsgroups.
But I read Desert Dweller's message differently.
He (she?) said that he couldn't access newsgroups OTHER than Microsoft's.
He didn't say what server he was trying to access them from,
but it may be that his server has a different security set up,
e.g., a special port, SSL, etc. He needs to find out the requirements of his news server in that case.
His ISP may be able to provide helpful information.
For example, I access the USENET newsgroups through inetnews.worldnet.att.net.
I need to log on using my att.net user name and password and specify use ofan SSL connection.

Hi Ed,

This is the receiving news server address that my ISP gave me:

news.west.cox.net

I don't know what my SSL connection is.

Hey Diane! That was it! Leaving "my news server requires me to log
on" unchecked.

After speaking with my ISP, who didn't know anything about Entourage
or Apple, who referred me to Apple, who also didn't know anything
about Entourage, who told me to speak with Microsoft, that's where I
got my answer.

Thank you for everything. And thank you too Ed.
