Head Count in PROJECT

We are looking to manage multiple projects through a work team using MS
Project. All projects have been entered into one MS Project database. Our
question is how to use the resources to get a required head count for each
day.

I'm thinking of assigning "dummy" resources" to each task in a single
project. In some cases, multiple resources for a task. Then copy-past the
project for each additional project and then adjust the time.

I'm stuck on how to sum up the number of "heads" required for each day. If
the same resource is assigned to two projects at 100% on the same day, the
summary should say 2 heads required.

Two ways to go, others will probably post as well.
First, put real names (or titles) into the Resource Sheet (or Pool). Assign
the resources to the tasks. This will load work into Project. Resources can
be loaded to what ever you need, the default is 100%. You can, if desired,
load your resources at less than 100% to a task. Loading John to 50% on a
task puts him there 4 hours a day.

Once your file is properly resource loaded, in Project2003 click
View/Reports/assignments... And use the Who Does What When report. The
report can be edited to show a tme scale of days, and rown and column totals.
In Project2007, select Report/Reports or Report/Visual Reports.

Totals can also be obtained from the Task Usage or Resouce Usage Views.
A third alternative is to use the Export Timephased data to Excel wizard
from the the Analysis toolbar.

One additional thing, what I told you will give you hours per day. Divide by
8 to get heads. If you assign the same resource to two tasks at 100% you are
overloading the resource (unless you have more than one of them).

Thanks Jim for your response.

Our goal is to replace a manually edited MS Excel Spreadsheet with MS
Project. In the planning stage, we will sum up the number of heads we need
for each day in order to support our projects with the purpose of hiring
temporary purchased services. It helps with planning ramping up and ramping
down of headcount. We are not limited in head count because we just purchase
extra heads on a week by week basis.

Scheduling a person on 5 projects would result in 5 x the 8 hour day. When
we sum up the total hours for all people and divid by 8, we should have the
number of heads we require for that day.
