HEADER AND FOOTER SHADING

I am trying to find out how to get rid of the grey
shading that automatically appears when you put anything
in a header or footer. I have tried everything I know
and read the entire knowledge base and can't find any
help.

The header and footer is in a different layer
than the text entry area of Word, only one of
the other can be active at one time, the other
will be greyed out to show that it is not the
active typing area.

It will not appear at all in Normal or Web layout
or outline views (nor in Reading Layout view in Word 2003)
