Header numbers aren't working

M

Mark Hilbrink

Hi,

After pasting a table in from another document, my heading levels beyond 1
[namely 2 and 3] disappeared. I was able to get back Header2, but it's
numbering incorrectly. Header1 is set to 7., but Header2 is coming in at 1.4.
Nothing in the settings seems to indicate anything about '4'. (They all seem
to match those of another document, which has all its headings correct.)

What happened?

What ARE you talking about? Headers, headings? I am afraid that your
message makes no sense at all.

Hmmm....

I don't see what's so hard to understand here...

What I was referring to below was the "style tag" Header1, Header2, etc....
they had gotten corrupt and were not numbering correctly in my document. I
have since fixed the problem (somewhat inexplicably, of course, by making a
change up above in the document, that 'magically' reset the numbering
everywhere below that), but perhaps someone else here can "translate" my
message for Peter...?

Thanks!

I think Peter was referring to the fact that the built-in heading styles are
named Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. Header is a different style, used in the
page header, and there is only one of it.

You're right -- of course! My bad...

But now that we have that decided, what's the cure?

Hard to say. Are you tracking changes? If so, numbering will never be
correct until all the changes are accepted. But see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for tips on
setting up outline numbering to be (almost) foolproof. And you may want to
get into the habit of pasting unformatted text lest you bring in "alien"
styles and numbering from another document.

Yes, actually. That's interesting that tracking would affect that (I know the
diff. between old numbering and the new -- and one can always "turn off"
changes/deletions anyway, right?) I will check that link, however.

Thanks!
