How do I insert headers w/page number? It seems headers disappear aftering
inserting page number. I don't see it in print layout or preview. Thanks
Most of the items in the Page Number button's dropdown create an entire header
or footer that replaces anything that's already there (in my opinion, a poor
design).
If you already have information in the header and want to add a page number
through the ribbon, it's two steps:
- Double-click the header area to open the header pane, and position the cursor
where you want the page number (you may need a tab or two to move it to the
center or right margin).
- Click the Page Number button (which now appears on the Header & Footer Tools
ribbon near the left end) and choose Current Position, then choose a number
format from the gallery.
Instead of the second step, if all you want is a plain page number, use Insert >
Quick Parts > Field and insert a Page field.
