Headers and margins

Is there any way that anyone knows of to set the margins
for headers? Basically what I'm trying to do is insert a
graphic into the header to be used as my letterhead. And
I can get that in there with no problem. However, I would
like then to be able to set an area for the type and
wonder if there is anyway to set that? Good grief, hope I
made myself clear on this. Thanks in advance to any
suggestions. Oh, I'm using Word 2000...

If you want your header margins to be wider than the rest of your
document, select View->Header and footer. Click the "Page Setup" icon
(looks like an open book!) in the Header footer toolbar, and set your
left and right margins accordingly. Assuming that you may have more
than one page in the documents you create from your template, on the
Layout tab, you should also select "Different first page" - unless you
want the graphic to appear on any subsequent pages.

After you've inserted your graphic, move your cursor to the top of the
body of your document. (This will close the Header/Footer work area!)

From the menu, choose Insert->Section Break - click "continuous".
Return to your document, then use File->Page Setup to reset your Left
and Right margins and, from the "Apply to" dropdown, select "This
point forward".

OTOH, if you want your header margins to be narrower than the rest of
your document, I would use a borderless one row table to position the
graphic. If you want text below the graphic - but still in the header
- add a second row to your table. Note: I seem to remember that wiser
people than I have advised against using tables in headers and footers
for some reason (that I can't recall at the moment, although it might
have something to do with using STYLEREF fields!) But, to date, I've
haven't encountered a problem.

Alternatively, you could reset the tabs in the header to position your
graphic (and text if you have any!)

Page margins cannot be changed in the middle of a page, but you can change
the effective margins with paragraph indents (positive or negative).

I believe they can be changed, but yours is a more elegant solution :)
FWIW, in Word 2000, I haven't encountered a problem changing the Left
and Right margins via Page Setup anywhere on the page after a
continuous section break - in this instance to accommodate wider
margins in the header (in effect, the first section).

May not work in other versions, but the OP was using 2000, where I
rarely use negative paragraph indents ... not that I'm prejudiced
against negatives, of course ;)

If I select a paragraph in the middle of a page, go to Page Setup, change
the left and right margins, and choose "Selected text" under "Apply to," I
get two Next Page section breaks.

If I place the insertion point in the middle of a page, go to Page Setup,
change the left and right margins, and choose "This point forward," I get a
Next Page break.

If I insert a Continuous section break, then go to Page Setup, change the
left and right margins, and choose "This section," then indeed I get
different margins from that point forward, but I would suspect that this
configuration would be highly unstable. I would certainly not choose to
change margins this way just for the purpose of having different margins in
the header or footer when this is easily accomplished with paragraph
indents.
