headers and page numbers on the same line in Word 2007 -- HELP

P

pcocozze

Please help. I want to put a header and page number on the same line
in Word 2007, with header on the left side and page number on the
right side. Whenever I use the insert tab for header, I get a
header. A-OK. But when I then use the same insert tab to insert page
number, then the header disappears. The same in reverse. If I insert
the page number and then the header, the page number disappears.

In Word 2007 for Dummies, page 205, it says to insert page number with
header, on the Design tab insert group, to put in a page number with a
header, choose Quick Parts>Page Numbers, BUT Page Numbers is not
listed under Quick Parts!

Would someone please tell me how to get a header and a page number on
the same line.

Many thanks.

The first thing to know, which for some reason Microsoft has never explicitly
said, is that every entry in the Header (or Footer) and Page Number galleries
_always_ replaces anything that's already there. The way to get both in the same
header is this:

First insert the header from the Insert > Header gallery. Then put the cursor
where you want the page number -- using one or two tab characters to move to the
right if necessary. Finally, click the Page Number button (on the Insert ribbon
or, since you're in the header, on the Header & Footer Tools ribbon) and click
Current Position. That avoids the "I want to be the only thing in the header"
monster.

You're correct that there is no Page Number item in the Quick Parts menu.
Instead. though, you could use Insert > Quick Parts > Field and choose to insert
a PAGE field to get a simple page number, and then format it in any way you
choose.

I knew that there was a way to do it, but I even looked in the Shelly Cashman Series: Word 2007 book and could not find it there. Thank you for the answer, It was very helpful.

I just want to give a HUGE thanks! I have spent HOURS trying to figure this out. Granted I was dealing with a death in the family, which maybe explains why I didn't think to use the help function sooner :) But this was AWESOME and EASY advice/fix! Thanks again!

This solution semi helped me, but I need the header and page numbers to continue on to more pages, but it repeats the same thing every page. Anyone know how to fix this?

The whole point of a header is to repeat on every page. If you're saying
that you're getting the same page number on every page, then you have
inserted plain text instead of a PAGE field. You can insert a PAGE field
using Alt+Shift+P.

You will have to add the page number field manually as suggested earlier in this thread. When you have done this, you can select the content and create your own header or footer gallery item.
