Headers & Footers

Scott

I'm going to rant for a while here b/c I'm hoping that
one of the Admin's of M.S. Word has fixed this in later
releases. Or at the very least will mention it for
considerations in a patch.

I'm working on project specifications and have to merge
about 15 separate documents, all of which have there own
headers and footers. When I started putting them
together I noticed that the Headers and Footers were
changing from what they originally were. I
thought "Fine" I'll just go and change them one at a
time. RIGHT - Whatever !

After playing ping pong with these for a while I found
out about "Section breaks". So, I thought cool, now I
can fix these and get back to work. Heck No ! These
aren't that easy to use. Plus the fact that you can only
see Headers and Footers in Print View BUT you can't see
where the Section Breaks are Hmmm, don't these go
together? Why do I have to switch views back and forth?
What a pain ! Who's the brain that programmed this?
Now M.S. Word has wasted my entire day messing with
Headers & Footers and I still haven't gotten any
further.

Day 2
I looked through the user groups for a way to turn this
stupid thing off. There are way too many automated
features in Word that you have to struggle with just to
get a simple document to look the way you want. I think
I could have typed this on a old rusty manual type writer
faster. It's fine to have them - just give us the
option to turn the darn things off when we don't want
them. So, I'm still not finished with my project
specs. From looking at the volume of related posts on
this user group I don't think anyone is getting anything
accomplished except pulling their hair out over something
that shouldn't be this complicated.

What was said about Office ? Something about getting
more productivity - HA ! what a joke (or a flat out lie)

People who work for Microsoft generally don't read these newsgroups or
respond to messages posted here. The only responses your are likely to get
are from your fellow Word users. While they may sympathize, they won't
appreciate the rant.

Which version of Word might you be using now?

You can see where section breaks are by turning that option on in the view
options. Or click the paragraph mark in your toolbar.

You have wasted a lot of time by trying to work with sections without
bothering to learn how they work. Word is a complex piece of software and
perhaps should come with warning labels.

Take a look at the MVP FAQ page on working with sections. (site in sig line)

Again, you are trying to fly a 747, or at least a Beechcraft. You are
frustrated because you know how to land a paper airplane and what can be the
big difference. You are crashing and it hurts. I'm sorry. If you aren't
willing to take the time to learn how to use Word, perhaps you would be
happier using WordPad. Some things are relatively easy to do in Word, but
merging 15 different documents and preserving headers/footers isn't one of
them.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!

Hi Scott,

All respect to your rant...
You do know that these groups are not officially monitored by MS, and that
you should send [email protected] an email if you want to make sure the
company hears something, right? Just making sure.

Some things that might help:

With the header/footer toolbar, it is relatively straightforward to change
each header/footer, if tediously repetitive. There's an icon for "show
next" which automatically takes you to the next h/f in the next section, so
you don't have to be able to see the section break in h/f view. Also an
icon for "same as previous" to easily unlink the h/fs while you are in each
one.

This link might help:
