Headers

I am completing a manuscript of 300 pages. Somehow, at
the end of every chapter, Word doubles the size of my
header. I have no text or content in the header. Doubling
the header size pushes the text farther down the page
than it should be. This only happens at the end of the
chapter. It's really screwing up the rest of the document
by making that last page look ridiculous by having a
double-sized header. The margins remain steady and the
page layout doesn't change. Only the header changes.

Any suggestions?

Check your last section to see if the vertical alignment is set to Center.
(Layout tab under Page Setup).

To clarify what Charles has told you, on the Layout tab of Page Setup, make
sure the vertical alignment is set to Top and not Center.
