headers

Jennifer Resch

I am a new user with very little computer skills and I could really use some
help on headers. All I need to do is add a header to the first page only.
When I add a header to a page it goes on all the pages and my instructor in
school doesn't want that. How do I put a header on the first page only? Thank
you in advanced to whoever answers this question.--

Would help if you said what version of Word you're using.

If you already created a header in your document, then delete it. If
you haven't yet created a header in your document, or if you have now
deleted it, then:

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on File | Page Setup | Layout tab | check
the "Different first page" box | OK. Click on the first page, click on
View | Header and Footer, create the desired header, and click on Close.

In Word 2007, click on the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon, click on the
little arrow at the bottom right corner of the Page Setup group, click
on the Layout tab | check the "Different first page" box | OK. Click on
the first page, click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon, click on Header |
Edit Header, create the desired header, and click on Close Header and
Footer.

Or in Word 2007, right-click the Header and then click Edit Header. On the
contextual Header & Footer tools, in the Options group, click Different
First Page. ;-)

It's not an obvious technique, I think harder to set up than previous Word
verisons.

At the end of the page 1 content, insert a Section Break-Next Page ( Page
Layout tab, Breaks dropdown)
If you've not already put something in the page 1 header, do so now.
On the second page, double click in the header area to edit it. In the
Navigation section of the Header and Footer Tools/Design tab, press the Link
to Previous to break the linkage. Now edit the page 2 header to be
different (or have no content), and you should now have a header on page 1
different from subsequent pages.

These steps are not necessary in order to create a First Page Header. As
noted by G-N-O, there is an option in the Page Setup dialog that is specific
to creating a First Page Header without the need to add section breaks. :)
