heading and list auto-numbering lost on conversion from W2003 toW2007

I have a document with outline heading numbering
(1., 1.1, 1.2, etc.) in Word 2003 format.
I can open it using Word 2007 and the numbering is
displayed OK.
But if I save it in the new native XML format (.docx),
then close and re-open the native Word 2007 file,
the numbering disappears.

Is this a bug, or am I missing something,
possibly in relation to the attached template?

What you are describing shouldn't happen. Can you successfully recreate
numbering in Word 2007?

Which template is attached shouldn't matter, unless the "Automatically
update document styles" option has been selected in the Templates and
Add-Ins dialog box.

To display the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box in Word 2007, click the
Document Template button on the Developer tab of the ribbon. (To display the
Developer tab: Click the Office button, and then click Word Options. In the
Popular category, select the "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" option, and
click OK.)

We solved this problem.

I should have mentioned that we are creating the Word 2007 files
using XSLT scripts to convert DocBook XML into Word-compatible
XHTML (not WordProcessingML). Everything was fine when using
Word 2003, but when using Word 2007, an extra (reverse) link from
the list style definition part back to the main style definition
was required, which we figured out by saving the Word 2007 file
to Web page (HTML) format and inspecting the output.

I might mention that by manipulating the style definitions
in Words' flavour of CSS, we have found that we can create
robust and reliable heading and list numbering definitions.
