Heading Numbering in Word 2002 / XP

Martha Breil

I have a template (filename.dot) with numbered headings.
Heading 1s number sequentially as they should. However,
Heading 2s keep defaulting to 1.x regardless of their
parent heading number. For example, in section 2.0 my
heading 2 reads 1.1. This is consistent throughout the
template.

I know how to set outline numbers and have selected the
Restart at Level 1 checkbox.

Do you know of a patch for this problem or a way to fix
it? I have other numbered templates with the same
settings that work fine. I tried importing the styles
into my problem template but it didn't help.

Thanks,
Martha

Hi Martha

My guess is that the Heading 2 style's numbering has been set up incorrectly. The problem is often that, when we're numbering
styles, and we get to the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, we have to cope with the Number format box. And it can say things
like 1.1 and we can't tell whether the first "1" refers to this level's 1, or the previous level's 1.

Here's a test. Get to the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog. In the Level box, choose Level 1. In the Start At box type, say,
7. In the Preview box, Heading 2 should now say 7.1. If it doesn't, then there's a problem with the Heading 2 numbering. If that's
the case, do the following, in order:

1. in the Level box, choose Level 2
2. delete everything in the Number Format box
3. choose something appropriate from the Previous level number box
4. type any punctuation you need (eg a full stop or period)
5. choose something appropriate from the Number Style box

When it's all looking good (eg 7, 7.1, 7.1.1) go back to Level 1, set the Start At box to 1, and all should be well.
