Heading styles applied to words (size, weight etc), but style remains 'Normal'

Word9.0.3821 SR1, Windows2K. I am applying Heading 1 and
Heading 2 styles to a document to create a Table of
Contents. When I apply the style to the text, the visual
effects are applied - Heading 1 Increases size and
Underlines and Bolds - but the style remains Normal. This
is the case for the whole document except for the first
Heading 1 and the first Heading 2. Therefore, when I
create the TOC, it has the first H1 and H2 and nothing
else. Previously, the TOC had been working correctly. I
have tried to apply other styles to text througout the
document and the same issue occurs. The document has a
number of screen images that have been pasted in from
print screen captures.

Any help appreciated as this is a large document that has
taken weeks to produce and is useless without a TOC.

Adzah,

I've had very similar problems in the past with Word 2000. Sometimes styles
won't apply correctly. Certainly the reason is some unsupported feature in
Word 2000, but be that as it may, after the damage is done, you still have
to struggle with fixing it.

After having this problem a couple of times, I do the following to identify
and fix the problem:

1. Turn on Document Map (click the button that looks like paper with a
magnifying glass over it). Your headings should show up there.

2. If text does not appear in the Document Map, re-apply the style. To do
this quickly, assign a shortcut key to the style (Format | Style | Modify |
Shortcut Key). For example, Heading 1 can be Alt+1. Position to the text and
press the shortcut key. You should see the text in the Document Map.

Notes: There are a couple of things you can do to manipulate which text
does/does not show up under the TOC. For example, under Format | Paragraph |
Indents and Spacing, there's a drop-down called "Outline Level" that
identifies the level that current text occupies in TOC and so forth. Body
text will not show up in TOC, but you can change the level of text here.
Also when generating the TOC, you aren't locked into using only Heading 1,
2, and so forth. Under the Table of Contents tab, click Options, and
designate which styles will be level 1, 2, etc. There's actually quite a lot
of flexibility...Hopefully one of these methods will help fix the situation
you are experiencing.

Hope this helps,
Kim

Click somewhere in text you want to be formatted using the Heading 1, etc.
style. Make sure you have no text selected. Apply the style. The entire
paragraph becomes formatted in that style. If you apply to selected text,
you apply the formatting without the style. (at least in Word 2000)

You can apply a style by selecting the entire paragraph, not just part of
it.
