I've just inherited a heavily customized project plan, and the creator is not
available to answer questions. Is there any way that I can get a report or
learn about what colums, filters, are in use. For example, one of the gantt
chart uses a flag field to help display summary tasks. How do I find out what
filed was used, short of opening every flag or text field? The project also
has several customized forms and filters that use different formula's - very
confusing and hard to track!
wk,
There is no report that will tell you how the file has been customized
but then you don't really need one. I suggest you do the following.
Open the file and go to Tools/Organizer. Customized items will appear in
the box on the lower right side. By selecting each of the tabs in the
Organizer window you will see all customized views, reports, modules,
etc. for the file. You might want to jot down the various customized
items for each tab for use in the next steps.
To look at the details of custom views and tables, go to View/More Views
and View/More Tables. As you select each custom view from the list you
wrote down, when you hit "edit" you will be able to see exactly what
makes up each view (i.e. screen type, table, group and filter). Then do
a similar thing for each custom table. You will be able to see which
Project fields are assigned to which column in each custom table.
To look at the details for filters, go to Project/Filtered For/More
Filters. As you select each custom filter and hit "edit" you will see
the filter details. A similar process can be used for custom Groups.
To look at custom forms, go to Tools/Customize/Forms. Again select the
form of interest and hit "edit".
As far as determining which fields are used, you could set up your own
custom view table to display all of Project's fields however that may be
a bit tedious with the plethora of fields in current versions of
Project. A better approach may be to simply insert any field(s) you are
questioning into the current view and looking for data.
Hopefully this gives you a good start in finding out exactly what
customization is resident in the file.
