Help! I have a critical deadline (today) for submission of
a doctoral dissertation.

I created the doc in 2003

My university is unable to open it....

They are using MS Word 2000

The error they are getting is:

Document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions:

Check the file permissions for the document or drive
Use the file open dialog box to locate the document

Can you help? THX!

As a follow-up on symptoms, I have sent my file to a
number of people, some are able to open it, some are
not....this is quite perplexing......

try save as then select word 97-2002, that would make sure
it is backwards compatible, this is a quick fix for the
current doc

Thanks Jason--I tried that to no avail....However, I cut a
CD with the 2003-saved version, and tried opening it in
Word 2000, and it seemed to work OK, so I will send that
to them. THX again....

Suggestion: try saving your file again, this time as
an 'older' version of word than 2003. Use the SAVE AS
feature to allow you to choose another version or format
type.

THX DVID,

Yes, I've tried it multiple times. Unfortunately, there
seems to be some glich where people with 2003 can read my
files, but people with other versions cannot (even when
the file has been saved in a downlevel format). A notable
exception is 2000--when I save the file on a CD (in 2003
format), someone with 2000 can open it....weird! BTW, I am
in the US and my 2003 was purchased from ebay....But when
I tried to get MS help online it said that support was not
available in this country (us)....another weird thing....I
wonder if this has something to do with it....

Short version: Don't work directly with a CD-ROM file from within Word.

Long version:

If you want to be able to use your documents, when working with in Word, act
as if your floppy drive does not exist. (This applies to CDRW/CDR drives as
well.)
Don't use Word to:
Open a document on a floppy
Print a document on a floppy
Edit a document on a floppy
Save a document to a floppy (not even a copy)

Word regularly trashes documents on floppy drives!

Instead, work on the document using your hard drive. Copy it back and forth
using Windows.

Hope this helps.
