Help Files Not Working Properly

T

Todd Bennett

I'm having a problem with an install of Office 2K Premium on a Windows XP
Pro machine. The help files for all the Office applications work with the
exception of all the links. I would like some help as to the help system
structure so I can debug this problem.

Thank you.

Todd.

Todd,
I'm having a problem with an install of Office 2K Premium on a Windows XP
Pro machine. The help files for all the Office applications work with the
exception of all the links.

A number of the security patches for Internet Explorer that Microsoft
has released this year are known to break the HTML Help ActiveX
control, which is the component that provides the navigation
facilities in help files.

The problem is described in Knowledge Base article 822989 and, in your
case, installing Critical Update 811630 should sort it out.

One other thing that I forgot to mention is that Office Update 262767
turns off the "Show Me" and pop-up window definition functions in
help. See this article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for more
information:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=262767

If these are the types of links that you were referring to then you
may be able to restore the popup functionality by replacing
Ouactrl.ocx with an earlier version (for example, from the
installation CD). However, this may leave you open to the sort of
attack that the security update was meant to stop.
