Help me convert a color photo to BW!

When I try to change the color photo to BW by changing the saturation to
-100, it says the photo is BW, but when I import it into Quark, and I try to
do color separations, it thinks the photo is color, and so it comes out on
each separation page, rather than just the black. Can anyone help?

I don't use Quark but isn't there something in there to convert a photo to
B/W?

IrfanView is free and will easily convert to grey scale.
