Help! MS Word 2007 screws up my document when I try to print it

I have a bizarre problem with MS Word 20078. I have a 48 page document
which I need to render as a PDF. I have two different PDF printer drivers,
by two different manufacturers. If I try to print to either of them, to
generate my PDF file, Word adds a few line-breaks in front of
cross-references to Figures (this happens at least twice), and (either as a
consequence or as a bit of independent devilry) lose a chunk of one of my
footnotes. The result is that my 48 page document becomes a 49 page
document. As this happens with two different printer drivers, I don't think
it's the printer. It's Word. Can anyone help. This document is urgently
needed but it does have to be 48 pages (and not messed up!).

Thanks in advance.

First, have you examined the code around the footnotes?

Second, have you checked that your page setup is similar to the PDF page
layout?
