Fresh Install of XP
Fresh Install of Outlook 2003

Connecting via VPN (secure remote)

I start the wizard...give the ip of my exchange server and user name...I
know its seeing the exchange server because it changes the ip# into the
server name and my user name is underlined.....but this is the error I
receive.....

"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. You must connect to your
Microsoft Exchange Server computer with the current profile before you can
synchronize your folders with your offline" folder file."

Any ideas...........

After you establish the vpn connection, can you ping the exchange server by
fully qualified domain name and ip address? can the server be found by
doing a nbtstat -a servername?

I can ping the exchange server
192.168.4.22

and I can get a response from the nbstat , both using the ip....but when I
try to us the domain name I get no response on either

Thoughts? and thanks for helping

No. Add the server name and ip address to your local hosts/lmhosts files.

Sure. Lets assume that name of the exchange server is exchange01. you
"hosts" and "lmhosts" files under \windows\system32\drivers\etc will look
something like....

**** begin hosts ****
127.0.0.1<tab>localhost
192.168.4.22<tab>exchange01.microsoft.com<space>exchange01
**** end hosts ****

**** begin lmhosts ****
192.168.4.22<tab>exchange01<space>#PRE
**** end lmhosts ****

The hosts and lmhost file can be created/edited with notepad.

ps - don't included the begin/end lines.
<tab> means press tab key.
<space> means press the space bar.

Thanks are due from me too - I have been attempting to resolve this problem with the assistance of the SBS2003 Newsgroup for the best part of three weeks now. Unfortunately without success because one one ever answers - not quite true I resorted to a 'ANYONE WANT A DRINK' and got talking to a another guy with the same lack of response - anyway thanks. The drinks are on me should you ever come to Scotland and 'they' might as well close down the SBS2003 site - you're much better!
