Help! Pic and Clip Art failure in Word 2000

Picture files or clip art fail to load to the screen in Word 2000. A
rectangular border appears without content. Clicking on the box and choosing
edit will bring up the pic or clip on the picture editing screen, on closing and
returning to the Word pane there's nothing showing.
I have reinstalled Word but no change in the weird behavior. OS is Win XP.
Any hints, suggestions, solutions would be much appreciated. jim

On the View tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Picture
placeholders" (and make sure that "Drawings" is checked).
