Help, plan file locked in Server, possible lost work

Andy Bruncke

I am using Pro 2003 and had a plan file checked out and saved it
regularly. I went to close project and save one last time, and my
machine crashed (unrelated to Project). Once I was back up, I went to
open the file and it shows it as still checked out by me. I know how to
go into Server and force-check-in the file, but I do not want to lose
the 4 hours of work I had done since checking it out.

When I save a checked-out plan file, does it save it locally to a temp
file? Can I get access to this and resurrect the last save?

Help.

Why don't you save the project as an Offline file using File - Save Offline (DO NOT click File - Save As and save the file as an .mpp file). Then try saving the file as an Online project using File - Save Online. Perhaps this will save your project without losing the changes. Hope this helps.

Andy:

If you had a project open from the server and your machine crashed through a reboot, you will loose everything since your last save. There is no way to recover this loss. In the future, you might try saving offline if you intend to keep your plan open for many hours while performing other tasks.

Well, that is not exactly what I hoped to hear, but thanks. So, when I
have a file checked out and save it, it is saving it to the server
directly? So if there is a problem saving it there is nothing that can
be done but re-do the work?

Andy:

Yes, and that is true whether you're saving to a local hard drive, the server, or a file share. You should remember to do incremental saves. Another strategy is to use the save offline feature which temporarily writes a copy to your offline folders on your local machines. When in offline mode, the saves go faster so they're less interruption than they can be on Project Server where the client has to talk across the network. You can even turn on autosave for your session while in offline mode, however you should remember to turn it off when you're connected to the server or suffer through the interruptions.
