Help, some cntr+ keys do not work

I have windows xp proffessional and microsoft windows 2003 software on my HP
laptop. I have a problem where i simply cannot function as normal some of my
keyboards control + keys. For example the apple sign when writing out my
e-mail address, instead i have to use a symbol version of it in MSword.
I want to resolve this problem by asking others what this solution could be.

Did you try the Shift key instead of the Ctrl key?

The 'at' sign @ is Shift + 2, not Ctrl + 2.
