HELP! The passwords on my Outlook accounts are not remembered.

I maintain several Outlook client PC's, but one of them has a weird
problem. It won't remember the passwords for the incoming and outgoing
servers.

The PC is a fairly new HP (about 2 years old) running XP Home. Both XP
and Office are up-to-date with updates from the Windows Update site.
We're using Office 2000 Premium. Also have up-to-date Sophos
anti-virus software.

PROBLEM: I go to ACCOUNT --> PROPERTIES --> SERVERS and I enter the
username and password for the incoming server and click "remember
password", then click "apply". Then I click "server requires
authentication" and enter the username and password for the outgoing
server, and click "OK", then "OK" again.

However, when I exit the properties screen and come back again, both of
the passwords have been blanked out.

I also tried "Repair Office", but that didn't help.

Anyone have any ideas?

Here are some possible solutions:

For Outlook 2000 or 2002 on Win 98, NT, or 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684

For Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000:
(CW) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275465
(IMO) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259416

For all Outlook versions on Windows XP (note, this article is written for OE
but the solution applies to Outlook as well. Just ignore the parts that
refer to OE):
