Help! urgent - bug in PPT - play CD audio during presentation

A

Anil Philip

problems: (PowerPoint97 with service pack update SR-1, Windows 98)

Unable to get CD audio track to play during Powerpoint presentation.

On slide #1, I tried to have CD audio track #1 play during the slide show:
1. Insert | Movies and Sounds | Play CD Audio track
In the Play Options Menu, I set Start time as (say) Track 1 0:10, End time
at (say) Track 1 0:30. Click OK, Immediately the times get reset to 0:00.
The widget with the thumbwheel to set the time does not work either,
clicking the up arrow does not increase the times.

2. To get around the above, I changed the Start time as (say) Track 1 0:00,
End time at (say) Track 2 0:00.
The CD audio still does not play.
To test and keep track of what was happening, I added custom animation to
have the CD icon fly from the right with whoosh sound. It does fly in after
an unexplained delay of about 10 seconds and play the whoosh sound showing
the Windows sound is working - however, it still does not play the CD audio
track.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Also, I tested that my Windows driver/codec is working by Start | Run |
mplayer.exe and was able to play the CD audio track.
However, I cannot play it from the slide show.

Is this part of the original question, which is about how to create a "mixed
mode" audio and data CD?

If so, just forget trying to play the CD audio track in the PPT presentation
and instead rip the audio to MP3 and work with that.

Do you have two CD/DVD drives on your system? If so, try putting the audio
CD in the other drive.

Have you set your audio to run for the course of your
(#of) slides? (under animation setting)

When a program does not perform as designed or advertised, it is a bug. Windows
and PowerPoint are not designed to read both sections of a "CD Extra" formatted
disk. The CD Extra format is actually designed to play the audio portion on a
separate CD player in your car, etc., or play the data portion on a computer.
As I told you when you previously asked via email, what you are trying to do
won't work. Windows opens the CD as "data" and hands it off to PowerPoint.
PowerPoint doesn't know that there is an audio track on the disk because the
disk is open in data mode.

Put your CD in your computer's drive and you can either play it as an audio CD
or you can open the data portion. You can't open both sections at the same
time.

If you want to play CD tracks in a presentation that is also playing from a CD,
you'll need to have two CD drives and a second CD that contains the audio
tracks. Otherwise rip the tracks to disk and link to them and include them in
the data track of the CD Extra disk.

Thanks for your reply.
If the talk is 60 min, then there will not be enough space in the data
session. I ripped the talk track and found it was 55 Mb. I believe the CD
limits are 80 min or 630 Mb.
thanks,
Anil

Sonia,
Thanks for your reply.
Ok, I shall investigate about ripping the track and duplicating it into the
data session.
But what about the "Play Options" Menu bug mentioned below - do you see the
same problem in your version of PPT?
(PPT does not require at this stage, the CD to be in the drive)
thanks,
Anil

Do you have an audio CD in the drive when you are trying to do this, or do you
have the mixed mode CD in the drive? Try it with a normal audio CD in the
drive.

I can't tell from the original post if this is a problem when you're
building the PPT presentation or when you're building the CD. I think you're
panicked about getting this done, so we're not always getting the full
picture in your posts.

My response was for when you're building the PPT file and trying to insert
sound.

I had the audio CD in the drive. Even so, the PPT dialogue says explicitly
that the CD does not have to be in the drive.

I know that it says that, but I've not been able to make it work without the CD.
I think Echo knows more about this.

However, the next question is, are you setting the Custom Animation settings
once you set up the CD track? You have to right click the CD icon and go to
Custom Animation. On the Timing tab set the animation to start automatically or
on mouse click.

I've never seen anywhere where it says that the insert audio cd track will
play without the cd
thats just plain nonsense
Powerpoint doesn't "rip" anything off a cd into the presentation
As for you bug, it could be if can
Reproduce it under normal operating circumstances..
eg
1)while the cd is in the drive (its seems you have taken it out)
2)repro it on another computer

Whats left?
workaround the problem by doing what you thought powerpoint could do..
Use windows media player (don't forget to uncheck the copy protect music cd
option off) to rip the audio track to wma, or better mp3 ripping
program(there are heaps of free ones (www.tucows.com)
Then use some sound editing program like soundforge to remove all but 0:10
to 0:30

lost?

Lost,
Thanks for your suggestion - I have implemented it this way!
thanks,
Anil
