HELP: When opening a document, must click document before typing

R

-=rhino=-

I have many installations of MS Word 97, 2000, & XP and I have not had this problem on any of the other 150+ installations, but I have 1 machine that behaves wierdly. The computer is a Windows XP SP1 with Office 2000 Small Business installed.

When opening an existing document or even beginning a new document, the cursor is not at the beginning of the document. No keyboard input is accepted other than basic Windows keys (alt-tab, Windows key, etc.). To start typing I must click in the document. I also noticed that I can not right click on the toolbars to bring up a different toolbar until I click on the document. I've looked over the options and compared with machines that have the same OS and Office package and see no differences.

Any ideas? Your help is appreciated.

I had this focus problem at one time when I had a poorly written add-in in
Word's Startup folder. As it turned out, the add-in was written for a
version of Word earlier than the one I was using it, so I ditched it, and
that solved the problem. Check Tools | Templates and Add-ins to see what
add-ins (if any) you have loaded. One of them may be the cause of the
problem. If you are using Norton AntiVirus, don't overlook the Office
Plug-in as a notorious cause of conflicts with other Word add-ins. You can
disable the plug-in without compromising your virus protection provided you
leave Auto-Protect enabled.
