help with automatic settings

My inbox automatically deletes messages I have received after I open them. It
happens either after a period of time or each time I close the program. I
know it must be a setting--but where? They do not go into deleted...they just
disappear.

What view are you using on the Inbox folder?

In Outlook 2003:

Tools menu -> Options -> Other tab

Make sure "Empty the Deleted Items folder on exiting" is unticked.

However, the reply about the views is also crrect if your view hides read
e-mails.
