Help with blurry screenshots

Faith

Hello!

I use SnagIt to capture and resize images before placing them in Word. The
images look fine in SnagIt, but they turn blurry once I copy/paste them into
Word. The manufacturer of SnagIt says to change the image scale to 100% after
copying the image into Word, but that's not a solution for me -- my images
must be sized to specific sizes and CANNOT be set to 100%.

Do any of you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion; however, I already do all my image manipulation in
SnagIt before copying it into Word. I do no image manipulation at all in
Word.

The images look just the way I want them in SnagIt, but they look (and
print) blurry after they've been copied and/or inserted (as either .jpg or
..bmp files) into Word.

Any other suggestions for me? Thanks!

If they are not the desired size in Word, then you need to resize themin
SnagIt.

I'm not sure you're following me ....

The problem is not with the sizing ... the problem is that the screenshot
that's copied from SnagIt (where it looks fine) appears blurry in Word.

But you said that the advice you got to cure the blurriness was to set the
size to 100%. If you resize the image to the size you need, then it will be
100% in Word.

Right, but resizing to 100% is NOT the answer I need (as I told SnagIt). I am
a technical writer; write lots of procedural guides with screenshots sized
for indented step levels. The screenshot sizes MUST be what I specifically
set them to.

As I've said, the image looks perfect in SnagIt (crisp, clear, and the right
size). It's when it's been inserted into Word that it loses its quality.

I think you're still not understanding what I'm saying. I'm saying that if
you size the graphics (to the specific size needed) in SnagIt, then
(providing they are still clear in SnagIt), then when they are inserted in
Word, they will be inserted at 100%. That may or may not solve the problem.

But if what you're saying is that they are already the right size in SnagIt
and are becoming a different size in Word, then I can sympathize. I have
found that ppi settings in Word and (in my case) Microsoft Office Picture
Manager are widely discrepant. Possibly you can change the resolution of the
images inserted in Word. You might have a look at Tools | Options | General
| Web Options | Pictures to see if changing any of those settings will make
a difference.

SnagIt only captures at 96 pixels per inch (ppi)... If you want better
quality you need more pixels :)

When you first take the shot go to the Filter button & select Resolution.
Set it to a higher value -- I'd suggest 300 ppi (although they call it
"DPI"). Then specify your size & save in a decent format - preferably TIFF
or PDF, although you may get away with JPEG. Stay away from BMP, WMF, EMF,
PNG, GIF, etc. if the docs you insert them into are to be printed.
Experiment with several different combinations of resolution & file type to
find out which works best for you.

It took me forever to figure this out but here is what I learned: your monito
resolution may hold the answer!

I am an amateur web designer so I set up Snagit to automatically make scree
captures at 72dpi- which was the standard for web images. However, my monito
displays images at 96dpi.*

I went back to snagit and set it to do screen captures at 96dpi.

(how to change in snagit: look in "filters --> image resolution". if you don'
know the resolution of your monitor, right click on your desktop, and choos
"properties --> settings --> advanced --> general tab --> display --> dp
setting".)

problem solved. now when I paste images into word our outlook 2007, they loo
sharp and clear. when I paste them into photoshop they still look exactly th
same to my naked eye as they did when they were 72 dpi.

*dpi does not impact the pixel size of the image (duh, I can't believe I didn'
know that sooner!)
