help with cell

This is what I am trying to do....
In cell A1, i have a figure
I want to duplicate this in B1
In B1 i put =A1, and it reads "=A1"
Also tried `Auto sum` but that just prints the formula in cell B1.

Have never had a problem with this before but can`t work out what I am doing
wrong.The worksheet is protected but I have tried unprotected with the same
result. Is it maybe something in formatting?

help appreciated.

Your cell is formatted as text. Format as general and then re-enter your
formula, or hit F2 and enter on an existing formula.

B1 is most likely formatted as text. Reformat as General and reenter
your formula.

No worries, happens to a lot of people, and like everything else, is easy to fix
in hindsight. We just happen to see the same questions a lot of times so are
pretty sensitised to them. :)
