Help with Converting templates (with macros) from Word 97 to Word

Have about 6 templates created in Word 97 (with macros and toolbars) that
have been converted to Word XP. Having the following issues and could use
some guidance:

1. How can I set track changes so that any changes won't affect the doc
formatting?
2. Table of contents numbers are off by one number and updates incorrectly
in all versions except Word 97.
3. Can't print in Word XP without formatting inconsistencies.

Would prefer NOT have to rebuild these templates and macros. Any help would
be appreciated!!
