help with filtering...

Hello all,

I was wondering if this is even possible. I have this spreadsheet wit
2 columns (name and transactions). Is it possible to search fir th
first 5 letters of the name and combine the similar names into 1 fiel
and add the transactions? For example, I have this spreadsheet :

Name
Transactions

PIMCO-PACIFIC INVESTMENT MGMT. CO 15
PRUDENTIAL CAPITAL MGMT 267
PRUDENTIAL INVESTMENTS 9

RTEMIS INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT 5
RTEMIS INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT, LLC 5
SB CITI FUND LLC 30
SB CITI FUND MANAGEMENT LLC 368
SB CITI FUND MANAGMENT LLC 1
SB CITI FUND MGMT LLC 395

I would like the results to be something like this on a new sheet:

Name
Transactions

PIMCO-PACIFIC INVESTMENT MGMT. CO 15
PRUDENTIAL 276
RTEMIS INVESTMENT 10
SB CITI FUND 794

Hi
try the following:
- in C1 enter
=LEFT(A1,10)
- copy this down for all rows

- now use a pivot table and use column C as row source
