Help with MS Project Summary Tasks

I am using MS Project 2003 Standard. I have a frustating problem.

I created an overall summary task for the whole project. Problem #1:
The span of the summary task is wrong: it shows a 1 day duration
task. The project is many days long.

Problem #2: I have inserted the COST column from the INSERT menu, the
summary does not roll up the costs either: it reports it at zero. I
am sure the problems are related--the summary is wrong --it does not
recognize the indented project

I have tried the setting of Tools:Custom>Fields and have made sure
that it is set for rollup task: sum.

This summary item works on someone else's machine so I think it is my
MS Project settings.

Can anyone suggest how to solve this problem??

You don't have to create an overall project summary task.

Click on Tools | Options | View-tab and set the checkbox named "Show
project summary task" (near the bottom of the display).

As for why your summary task is incorrect ... I'd hazard a guess that you
haven't indented all the related sub-tasks beneath the summary task.

RightMouseButton on the toolbars and display the Formatting toolbar. The
outdent/indent buttons are on the left of the default configuration.
Click on a task (not a summary task) and click on the indent button to see
the effect,

Begin by displaying the project summary task above and practice using the
indent functionality and report back if you still have problems.

I think the problem is that the Calculation mode is set to Manual.

Go to Tools:Options: Calculation: Calculation Mode button set to
Automatic.

Watch out: if calculation is set to manual, then summary bars report
incorrect sums, and the critical path is not computed when the Gantt
Chart Wizard is used. Further the summary bar is only one day long no
matter what (before calculation is ordered!)

I have two students who have this problem. Perhaps this factoid about
calculation settings could be better documented

Thanks for the suggestions.

This fixed the problem:

Tools:Options:Calculation Tab:

Calculation Mode = automatic calculation
