Help: Word 98 for Mac: Characters Bunch Up & Overlap

rafael montserrat

I searched OE and HD. Where do I set time zones.

NG work arounds...OK.

I'll report on the word problem. At present I have to focus on novel.

Plain text workarounds are asterisks for *emphasis* and _underline_ for
titles, though caps for emphasis is not rude...

But here's a second NG issue to deal with--I'm online and getting your posts
about midnight, 1am Sunday but they show up in my Entourage NG dated about
6pm Sunday. Anybody know what might be causing this? Rafael, do you have
your time zones set properly? Would this be my issue?

And don't forget to let us know how the Word problem progresses...

Hi Beth,

In plain text, then, emphasis HAS to be done with caps because ITALIC,
customarily used for emphasis, is not available.

Best.

Hi Rafael,

My response to Dayo's post answers most of your questions. Check back for
it.

As for selecting "colors and >> in preferences", you're best off leaving it
at the default, though you can make changes if you want. Look at what I did
to your post below. If you return your preferences to the default, you'll
see what six generations of posts would look like. The colors stop changing
after the fourth generation. The >>> marks seemingly go on forever.

Posting in-line is fine. Shouting is not fine. EXCEPT for deliberate
emphasis :). Now that you're in plain text (thank you!), you won't need to
shout.

Hi Rafael,

The "threaded" Beth referred to is just sorting the posts by subject,
instead of date, and it's entirely a matter of personal preference, not a
netiquette issue. I *think* you should be able to set Outlook Express to
either post to NGs in plain text instead of HTML, or to reply to a message
in the same format it was written, which should fix the differentiation
problem by using colors and >>> for different posters automatically.
Posting
in-line (interspersed point by point) or top-posting is fine--sometimes one
makes more sense than another.

Re your later question: Remove Office will not remove any of your
documents,
but will get rid of the myriad prefs files, system extensions, etc that MS
Office puts in and doesn't always label clearly. And reinstalling should
return the components that Outlook, etc, may depend on, which is what the
warning is really for. You will want to backup your preferences,
especially
in Excel, Powerpoint, which will also get removed along with Word, as part
of Office.

But your data will be fine (although it's always a good idea to backup
before doing any type of installation, and especially a good idea to backup
more frequently when your system is acting wacky. :)

I checked out the KB article you mentioned--I'm really not an expert on
this
at all but....--since it happens with every document, I think you can be
pretty confident you don't have a damaged document, but the first six
things
they say to try under "Identifying a Damaged Document" may help you narrow
down the problem. I feel like extension conflicts usually result in
crashes
rather than misbehaving displays, but starting up with extensions off is
always worth a try, and a fairly quick check.

Did a KB search for either MS or Apple return anything helpful re graphics
cards or display problems?

I have removed office 98 and re-installed it from my CD disk. When I tried
to open Word, I got "Microsoft Office First Run" asking me for my "Office 98
Ten digit CD Key" which I can't locate and haven't got.

I do have Product ID numbers. But I have on record three different Product
ID numbers. I recall that when I first used MS support alot, that tech
persons did give me replacement or new product ID numbers.

However, I don't think I need the Product ID #. What I need is the Ten digit
CD Key. I don't have the jewel case or the product info that had the CD Key.

How can I get into my own programs? With this CD Key or with a crow bar? Any
way will do. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Rafael

For Office 98 and 2001, the two center sections of the Product ID comprise
the 10-digit CD key, so try portions from those numbers you do have. In my
system, the CD key part starts with digit 6.

With legit software that wasn't preinstalled on the machine, MS does have a
procedure for replacing lost CD keys, but hopefully the above will help you
out more quickly.

Hi Rafael,

My response to Dayo's post answers most of your questions. Check back for
it.

As for selecting "colors and >> in preferences", you're best off leaving
it
at the default, though you can make changes if you want. Look at what I
did
to your post below. If you return your preferences to the default, you'll
see what six generations of posts would look like. The colors stop
changing
after the fourth generation. The >>> marks seemingly go on forever.

Posting in-line is fine. Shouting is not fine. EXCEPT for deliberate
emphasis :). Now that you're in plain text (thank you!), you won't need
to
shout.

Hi Rafael,

The "threaded" Beth referred to is just sorting the posts by subject,
instead of date, and it's entirely a matter of personal preference, not a
netiquette issue. I *think* you should be able to set Outlook Express to
either post to NGs in plain text instead of HTML, or to reply to a
message
in the same format it was written, which should fix the differentiation
problem by using colors and >>> for different posters automatically.
Posting
in-line (interspersed point by point) or top-posting is fine--sometimes
one
makes more sense than another.

Re your later question: Remove Office will not remove any of your
documents,
but will get rid of the myriad prefs files, system extensions, etc that
MS
Office puts in and doesn't always label clearly. And reinstalling should
return the components that Outlook, etc, may depend on, which is what the
warning is really for. You will want to backup your preferences,
especially
in Excel, Powerpoint, which will also get removed along with Word, as
part
of Office.

But your data will be fine (although it's always a good idea to backup
before doing any type of installation, and especially a good idea to
backup
more frequently when your system is acting wacky. :)

I checked out the KB article you mentioned--I'm really not an expert on
this
at all but....--since it happens with every document, I think you can be
pretty confident you don't have a damaged document, but the first six
things
they say to try under "Identifying a Damaged Document" may help you
narrow
down the problem. I feel like extension conflicts usually result in
crashes
rather than misbehaving displays, but starting up with extensions off is
always worth a try, and a fairly quick check.

Did a KB search for either MS or Apple return anything helpful re

For Office 98 and 2001, the two center sections of the Product ID comprise
the 10-digit CD key, so try portions from those numbers you do have. In my
system, the CD key part starts with digit 6.

With legit software that wasn't preinstalled on the machine, MS does have a
procedure for replacing lost CD keys, but hopefully the above will help you
out more quickly.

Dayo

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like remove/reinstall did anything to resolve
my problems with word 98.

I happened upon a Microsoft page called Product Support Lifecycles, and it
says that support for Word 98 and Office 98 expired in June of 2003. Doesn't
mean that we can't carry on.

We'll see. I can't imagine what has happened to an application that has
served me so well for so long. Maybe I should try it with another copy of
office, or word.

I would certainly appreciate it if anybody has any more ideas. Have any of
you Word 98 users ever had this problem as I have described it? I would be
interested to know.

Thanks to Dayo and Beth ‹ not that I'm giving up on this issue or dropping
it from the group.

Here are the notes I took as the problems appeared with this installation.

1. 50% of the time when double click selecting a word, the select covers the
word but goes over into the space following the word. Sweep (manual?)
selecting, as opposed to double click selecting, works accurately.

2. When selecting from the middle of a word to the middle of the next or
another word, the selection doesn¹t stop where I want it to but can jump and
select the whole line.

3. Select word>drag>place a few words back, then return to the original
place results i9n the select changing position. Now it starts in the middle
of the original word, and completely covers the previous word, which word
had no part in the original select> drag>place.

4. Select a word, move it into the space between two other words and it
won¹t go there. It breaks up the new word to the right and lands in the
middle of that word. Then, anywhere the cursor is placed the same thing
happens and it becomes impossible to place the word between two other words.
It will always land in the middle of a another word. The words in the
sentence have to be written out.

5. The only things I have yet to see happen that were happening before I
removed and reinstalled office, are the right margin lines losing format and
spreading off the window, and a line or two getting really bunched up and
illegible. What is happening now, though, is enough to show me that things
are still not right, and I highly esuspect that the two items will show up
soon. I can write in the program, but there¹s always some little glitch to
fix.

As for selecting "colors and >> in preferences", you're best off

Hi Rafael,

The "threaded" Beth referred to is just sorting the posts by subject,
instead of date, and it's entirely a matter of personal preference,
not
a
netiquette issue. I *think* you should be able to set Outlook Express
to
either post to NGs in plain text instead of HTML, or to reply to a
message
in the same format it was written, which should fix the
differentiation
problem by using colors and >>> for different posters automatically.
Posting
in-line (interspersed point by point) or top-posting is
fine--sometimes
one
makes more sense than another.

Re your later question: Remove Office will not remove any of your
documents,
but will get rid of the myriad prefs files, system extensions, etc
that
MS
Office puts in and doesn't always label clearly. And reinstalling
should
return the components that Outlook, etc, may depend on, which is what
the
warning is really for.

I checked out the KB article you mentioned--I'm really not an expert

be
pretty confident you don't have a damaged document, but the first six
things

narrow
down the problem. I feel like extension conflicts usually result in
crashes
rather than misbehaving displays, but starting up with extensions off
is
always worth a try, and a fairly quick check.

Did a KB search for either MS or Apple return anything helpful re

Hi Rafael,

(Composed rather earlier than actually posted, apologies....)

I have little in the way of new ideas, but am reiterating, in hope someone
else will leap into this intriguing problem...

You've removed and reinstalled, and installed all required patches for
Office 98. You've tried renaming Preferences and Normal.dot.

Have you checked for a virus, with updated virus defs?

Have you booted with extensions off to see if the problem still occurs? (Or
with just the set of extensions that Word depends on, nothing else)

With the selection problems (#3 and #4) have you checked to see if these
print out incorrectly? Before you said the "text overruns margin" and "text
bunches up" problems were limited to the display and did not print out. Is
this still true?

Have you checked Apple and Word KBs, and Google groups, for topics about
display problems?

Have you remembered whether you installed anything in July or thereabouts
that may be interacting with Word or your display hard/software?

(I'm really reaching for these questions below...)

Many of the options on the Edit tab of Prefs relate to selecting. As you
wait for the main problem to reappear, perhaps see if having them checked or
unchecked does anything?

Since the problems you are seeing now all relate to drag-n-drop, what
happens if you drag and drop into different windows?

Does drag-n-drop mess up in any other MS application?

Sorry I can't be more helpful--I used Office 98 for some 7 years w/o seeing
anything like...

5. The only things I have yet to see happen that were happening before I
removed and reinstalled office, are the right margin lines losing format and
spreading off the window, and a line or two getting really bunched up and
illegible. What is happening now, though, is enough to show me that things
are still not right, and I highly esuspect that the two items will show up
soon. I can write in the program, but there¹s always some little glitch to
fix.

Installed all required patches for Office 98.

The three or four patches? Yes. Beth told me about those, and that they had
to be installed in the exact order specified. At the time, there wasn't a
fix. I was confused by those patches. For instance. How could word 98 have
worked for so long without these patches? Did others encounter problems?
They must have been different than mine or more people would have recognized
what I am talking about, and posted some responses. What is the reason for
patches? Because of reported problems? ‹ I had none until this. New
conflicts with new stuff on the market ‹ downloads ‹ other applications ‹
bugs and viruses?
You've tried renaming Preferences and Normal.dot.

No. First I heard of that (I think). Rename them what? The newly installed
preferences preference folder from the remove office ‹ reinstall Office 98
from my disk? In the Preferences just for Word, or for all of Office? I
don't know what "Normal.dot" is.
Have you checked for a virus, with updated virus defs?

No. Does that mean by having a current virus program like Symantec
installed? I haven't had a virus program installed for over three years. The
one I have, Norton, is about 4 years old and probably outdated. Right? Do I
need to buy a new virus application? Maybe I've been remiss in that area.
Like "If it works ‹ don't fix it."
Have you booted with extensions off to see if the problem still occurs? (Or
with just the set of extensions that Word depends on, nothing else)
No.

With the selection problems (#3 and #4) have you checked to see if these
print out incorrectly? Before you said the "text overruns margin" and "text
bunches up" problems were limited to the display and did not print out. Is
this still true?

Just now I am only able to recreate "text bunches up" problem, not the "text
overruns margin", which I temporarily fix by select all, cut, paste, right
in place. "Text overruns margin" starts to happen, then occurs with
increasing frequency. About "text bunches up" problem: just two letters
becoming one exactly over the other. When I print that, it comes out OK. I
recall that all the errors printed all right.

In this email, for instance I can select one word, and the cursor will go
wherever I want it to including the middle of another word, like this:
"word like liwordke" Likewise in all my other applications.
In Word, I select a word and the cursor will only take the selected word to
one side or the other of the other word but the cursor will not settle in
the middle of the other word. Like this: "word like like word" Right now
I'm not able to re-create the "text overruns margin" to see how it prints
out
This problem is extremely annoying and time consuming with the potential,
possibly, of damaging my work, mainly a novel close to completion. I back up
LOTS. Two to three zips, with the zip window right next to the novel folder
window, for a simple drag over after saving the document first. And less
frequently to two CDs

Have you checked Apple and Word KBs, and Google groups, for topics about
display problems?

I've gone all over Apple and Word KBs. There were some approximations to my
problem, but not close enough to do me any good. I haven't known about
Google groups. I'll try them. Are they good?
Have you remembered whether you installed anything in July or thereabouts

OK

Since the problems you are seeing now all relate to drag-n-drop, what
happens if you drag and drop into different windows?

Only that the Cursor won¹t go between the letters of a word Cursor won¹t go
between the letters of a word. Drag and drop within a window, or dragged to
another window and when dropping the selected word it will only go to front
of the destination word, but it leave proper single space to either side of

Does drag-n-drop mess up in any other MS application?

No Absolutely not. Internet Explorer 5, outlook express 5. I have never uset
power point, and seldom Excell.
Sorry I can't be more helpful--I used Office 98 for some 7 years w/o seeing
anything like...

I know. I've used it flawlessly for five years. I'm thinking of using it
right off the disk, if that can be done. Also, when I spoke to MS support I
learned that I can get Word 2001, apart from office for $149. He says it
will work in my computer. Great. When I get my first advance on the book.
Actually, I think if I can't fix this easily now that I'll work on Claris
and Work Perfect or maybe word v.4. Or even on my grandfather's old
Remington. I'll have to get a green eye shade, an arm elastic, and smoke a
lot of cigarettes so ash falls down onto the keys. Melville wrote long hand.
I can't figure how those guys did it without drag and drop. You had to be
really good.

Don't feel bad. Even in many other incidences of my life, people are always
saying to me, usually derogatorily: "Well...I've never seen (experienced,
heard of, been told, been confronted with, etc,. etc.) that one before." My
answer to them is often ‹ and to you, Dayo, I'm not being facetious, while
to the outside world I can be ‹ "Well. You'll never be able to say that
again, will you?"

Dayo. Thanks for your efforts and patience. If I find a fix I'll let you and
Beth the group about it. If you come up with something else let me know. As
it is, you've given me a lot of stuff to try.

Rafael

Oh. There are some questions above. I'd be grateful if you would give me

For years I didn't explore newsgroups and shied away from them. But they are
really great communities.

Hi Rafael,

I've been having trouble off-and-on getting into the server but here I am
again. Dayo's list is excellent. I've made some comments below so check
there.

The three or four patches? Yes. Beth told me about those, and that they had to
be installed in the exact order specified. At the time, there wasn't a fix. I
was confused by those patches. For instance. How could word 98 have worked for
so long without these patches? Did others encounter problems? They must have
been different than mine or more people would have recognized what I am
talking about, and posted some responses. What is the reason for patches?
Because of reported problems? ‹ I had none until this. New conflicts with new
stuff on the market ‹ downloads ‹ other applications ‹ bugs and viruses?

Each patch fixes something or it wouldn't be issued. What it fixes may not
be something that affects the applications you use or the functions you use.
Many patches have to do with security. If you read the material that's
written about each updater, you will get an idea of what it does. For
instance, take a look at the following URL which describes what the Office
98 Combined Updater fixes:
load/office98/Off98Updater.xml&secid=20&ssid=1&flgnosysreq=False>

So did you follow the procedure to remove and reinstall Office 98 with all
the updaters?
No. First I heard of that (I think). Rename them what? The newly installed
preferences preference folder from the remove office ‹ reinstall Office 98
from my disk? In the Preferences just for Word, or for all of Office? I
don't know what "Normal.dot" is.

No offence, Rafael, but you're not paying attention. I recommended this and
explained the full procedure in an email on this thread, dated 9/16.

Also, did you try the fix for a corrupt document? That is to copy all but
the very last paragraph mark and paste into a blank new Word doc.

VERY remiss. Try "if it works today and you get a virus tomorrow, it won't
work"! Check the Symantec website to find out about updating your version
of Norton. Do it, run a deep diagnostic, and then set the program to
automatically download new virus definitions on a regular basis.

Well then, try it. Quit out of all applications, turn off your computer and
reboot while holding down the Shift key. Keep the Shift key pressed until
the "Welcome to Mac OS Extensions Off" message closes. Now open Word and
see if there are any changes. If all is well, you have an extension
conflict somewhere. Post back for how to isolate it. If there are no
changes, reboot to turn the extensions back on.

In this email, for instance I can select one word, and the cursor will go
wherever I want it to including the middle of another word, like this: "word
like liwordke" Likewise in all my other applications. In Word, I select
a word and the cursor will only take the selected word to one side or the
other of the other word but the cursor will not settle in the middle of the
other word. Like this: "word like like word"

Go to Preferences> Edit. Do you have the option to "automatically select
entire word" checked? If so, uncheck it. That could fix this particular
problem. The bunching up is something else.

While you're in Prefs> Edit, do you have Allow Fast Saves turned on? If so
turn it off and leave it off (forever!).
Right now I'm not able to re-create the "text overruns margin" to see how it
prints out This problem is extremely annoying and time consuming with the
potential, possibly, of damaging my work, mainly a novel close to completion.
I back up LOTS. Two to three zips, with the zip window right next to the novel
folder window, for a simple drag over after saving the document first. And
less frequently to two CDs

I've gone all over Apple and Word KBs. There were some approximations to my
problem, but not close enough to do me any good. I haven't known about
Google groups. I'll try them. Are they good?

Dayo is referring to Google's search mechanism for Groups. Go to
www.google.com, click on Groups and then on Advanced Search. You will get a
dialog that allows you to fill in various search criteria.

Something just occurred to me. What font(s) are you using? If it's
something exotic, have you tried switching to Ariel or Times New Roman?
Does it make a difference?
Only that the Cursor won¹t go between the letters of a word Cursor won¹t go
between the letters of a word. Drag and drop within a window, or dragged to
another window and when dropping the selected word it will only go to front
of the destination word, but it leave proper single space to either side of
it¹s drop.

There are some known problems in Word with drag and drop though they usually
involve tables. Do you have any of these problems if you just cut and
paste?

The MS servers are acting up (at least for me) so I couldn't read Beth's
answer, but hopefully this is not a 100% repeat--

source of the problem, and what Normal.dot is:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/WordMac/MacWordNormalTemplate.htm

It says Word X but applies to 98 as well. Basically the same procedure
applies to renaming the Prefs file, Word will create a new one on reopening
and if the problem is solved, a corrupt Prefs file was causing it.

Browse the http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs site, lots of using info re using
Word, and a tab for Word:Mac that has a few other troubleshooting
procedures.

If you already have Norton Anti-Virus, you should be able to download an
updated virus definitions installer, install it, restart computer, and run
NAV with 10/1 defs.

Well, definitely try that--it is the quickest way to see if software is
interacting badly. MacHelp will tell you how to boot with all extensions
off, you may have to do some fiddling in Extensions Manager if Word won't
run w/o certain extensions.Since the problem isn't printing out, it seems logical to me that it is only
in the surface interaction of Word and your display, not fundamental
document corruption. Besides, you did the MS checks for corrupt documents
that you found on the web before, right?

Re the installations, I've heard rumors have said OS 9.2.2 is not necessary
unless you are running X as well, and that exclusively OS 9 systems can
stop at 9.2.1, and that 9.2.2 causes some problems. I've been running 9.2.2
for a while and haven't seen any, and I think they were talking about
stability issues *anyhow*, so I would consider going back to 9.2.1 a very
last resort, considering how much trouble it would be. Not sure whether the
other programs could cause issues.

Well, cut and paste with keyboard shortcuts will workaround drag and drop,
and temporarily switching work habits might save you some frustration. (If
you have an academic connection, some colleges have MS products for $20 or
$70).
Don't feel bad. Even in many other incidences of my life, people are always
saying to me, usually derogatorily: "Well...I've never seen (experienced,
heard of, been told, been confronted with, etc,. etc.) that one before."

Yes, people do have a tendency to say that as if they've never seen it, so
it can't be happening...

Hope something helps,
Dayo

The MS Servers are acting up for *everyone* currently. They are under
unremitting attack from this stupid virus that is going the rounds. The
server farm is getting something like 100 hits a second.

MS has an entire team working on the problem, and hopes to have a solution
soon. But it isn't easy: this is not a single server we're talking about,
it's a giant server "farm" of clustered servers. The virus tends to bog
down the server responsible for keeping all the others synchronised.

So everything is dragging while multiple servers retry and re-synch every
second or so.

I am abut to join the multitude who are demanding that users and their PCs
have to sit an exam and gain a licence before they are allowed to connect to
the Internet via a broadband connection!

Cheers

Well, the viruses (virii?) coming to my hotmail account are finally slowing
down, so maybe the peak has passed, if the end is not in sight--or no,
actually, I just went and checked it, and they were only taking a break for
the night. Back in full strength.

Perhaps some govts could mandate basic computer safety as part of a high
school (or elementary) education, add it to the tests for graduation...
(actually, now that I think about it, this will probably eventually happen,
in one form or another, if not already on the basic computer syllabi...)

Hi Rafael:

I appreciate the question, but for obvious reasons, we can't answer it :)

It is fair to say that it is a much more difficult job protecting the
Microsoft servers than it is protecting a normal ISP's server.

Attacks on Microsoft are much more ferocious than they are on any other
server on the Internet: the incoming pipes are fatter, they hose a lot more
attacks per second into the farm.

And that's the other problem Microsoft has: it's not a single server they
are trying to protect: it's a very large scale server farm. The complexity
means that everything affects everything else, and as you can imagine,
everything has to be very finely tuned to get the necessary speed.
Microsoft is currently keeping a lot of people out of bed late at night
working out how to dump attacks like this without dragging the entire server
farm to a crawl.

Bear with them. We have to! The MVPs are getting hit harder than almost
everyone else: I am getting 400 - 600 viruses a day: the MVPs on broadband
are peaking higher than that.

Cheers
