there is a funny letter q that is at the curser. when I
print from a file there are periods between each word.
hope someone could help me.

The funny q is called a pilcrow: ¶ it marks the end of paragraph. The dots
between the words indicate spaces. These are non-printing characters which
you can switch on and off by clicking the ¶ button or by going to the View
tab on Tools > Options.
