This situation is fairly common and although the
resolution is quite simple, it is not intuitively obvious.
Just to the left of the Reject icon is a Hide icon. This
Hide feature actually deletes the task from the task list
but it isn't called Delete to prevent confusion with
actually deleting a task from the project itself.
