Hide Document Elements, etc. in 2008 Toolbar?

Charles

In order to save vertical space while working on a MacBook Pro, how can
I hide the Word 2008 toolbar (if that's the official name for it) where
Document Elements, Quick Tables, Charts, etc., appear?

Thank you,

Charles

It's called the Elements Gallery, just by the way. There is a
preference to not activate it, so that it stays collapsed (Preferences |
Elements Gallery), but no way to hide the thin bar in Print Layout view.
It does not appear in some other views (Draft, etc).

Use Help | Send Feedback in any Office app to ask for a preference to
turn it off entirely.

Thanks for your answer.

Yes--I already have Elements Gallery unchecked in the View menu. It's
the Elements Gallery bar that has the Documents Elements, Quick Tables,
Charts, SmartArt Graphics and WordArt buttons that I want like to get
rid of.

So what you are saying is that the only solution is to complain to
Microsoft?

I think Daiya's "no way to hide the thin bar in Print Layout view" is
pretty clear, as well as entirely accurate. Though technically, I
suppose it's more of a suggestion for a long-term fix than a solution.

Working in Draft view is an excellent solution for some (like me).

Without wanting to have a "go" at anyone, it is also true that without the
Elements Gallery, you can't drive Word properly.

Word 2008 works in a different manner to any of its predecessors. You are
now expected to "assemble" documents by choosing "Document Parts".

So without the Elements Gallery quickly available, Word becomes impossible
to use :)

But if you are anything like me, it may take you a couple of months to get
used to this :)

What you quoted was clear to me, too, but I was not completely sure I
understood what she meant by, "Use Help | Send Feedback in any Office
app to ask for a preference . . . " and was just asking for further
explanation.

I am undoubtedly missing something here--aren't the items in the
Elements Gallery also available from the application menus?

Yes, this would be a solution but unfortunately for most of my work I
need to be in Print Layout view.

Sorry I was testy - reading the screwed up formatting from the web
portals in my newsreader has given me a giant headache...

No, they are not :) That's the whole point of the new user interface.

The idea is that each "command" or "item" is supposed to appear in one place
only. Anything in the Element Gallery will not be accessible any other way.

There is currently some duplication between the toolbars and the Formatting
Palette, but that's actually a "bug" they have not yet got around to fixing.

Cheers

Gosh I hope they don't get around fixing it.

There are some things I am accustomed to getting from the Main menu and
other from icons, on the floating menu bars. Even if they are duplicated
in both places. For example in Office products I never invoke print from
the icon on the editing Bar as well as Save.

On the other hand items such as Left, center, Right and Justify I prefer
to use the icon on the edit menu ribbon.

Or at least if they *fix* it, to allow it to automatically put itself
back on one or the other depending upon where you remove it from.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!
