Tim,
If all your cells have white backgrounds (and you're not
already using conditional formatting) then the easiest way
might be to conditionally format the cells:
Highlight all cells on the sheet and make sure A1 is the
active cell then
Format->Conditional Format
Select 'Formula is' and enter =ISERROR(A1)
Click format and change the font colour to white.
