Hiding columns, cannot move items off sheet

I have a large spreadsheet with data out to columns GQ. I wish to hide over
half of the columns on occassions (to create custom views) but cannot
complete due to a message
"Cannot move items off sheet"
Can anyone help me resolve this issue.

Are you using Microsoft Publisher for this spreadsheet?

No, I am doing it in Excel, and I have since run a macro that has resolved
it, thankfully.
