Hiding columns spanned by merged cells

I would like to hide columns in a worksheet (i.e. past months in the year) that are spanned by a merged cell (i.e. heading of "2009"). Excel however insists on hiding either all or none of the columns spanned by the merged cell. It doesn't do this in past versions I've used on a Windows machine.

Can I do this??

And that's only one of the myriad issues involving merged cells... Avoid
them like the plague, they will destroy a workbook faster than most anything
else you might do.
