Hierarchial View of One-to-Many Related Linked Tables

J

Joel D Kraft

I am having a problem with relationships on tables that are linked to SQL
Server via ODBC. My tables are linked and can be viewed and modified in
datasheet view just fine. I can edit the relationships on the database to
include these tables.

The problem is when I go into datasheet view for my master table, the [+]
icon to view the related data is not available. This works fine for
non-linked tables.

I know that the behavior is still supported because I have been using
hierarchical-dataset view of linked tables for years, and one is working in
this exact same database file. I am just unable to get it to work for NEW
relationships since I upgraded of Access 2007.

Hi Joel,
This is a quick note to let you know I have reproduced your issue at my
side and that I am performing research on this issue now. I will get back
to you as soon as possible. I appreciate your patience.

Hi Joel,
Sorry for delaying this response for a long time since we are discussing
this issue internally.

Based on our tests, we did not find that the feature you described exists
in Access 2003. Our tests used Orders and Order_Details table in Northwind
database.
Here are our results:
Linked tables with relationship defined:
Access 2003: Subdatasheet not present
Access 2007: Subdatasheet not present

Local tables with relationship defined:
Access 2003: Subdatasheet present
Access 2007: Subdatasheet present

I am trying to confirm this with our product team, however I have not got
their response now. I noticed that you said you had been using
hierarchical-dataset view of linked tables for years. Could you please let
us know how you did that?

Look forward to your response. If you have any other questions or concerns,
please feel free to let me know.

Best regards,
Charles Wang

Hi Charles,

You may be right that it is also not in 2003. I have been using and
upgrading this particular access database for a long time. It may have
originally set up this relationship in 2000 or XP!!

Well now I'm doing a new project where I need this same functionality. Even
though I may have created these particular relationships LONG ago, they
continue to work just great in 2003 and 2007, which seems to imply to me that
the functionality is still are supported in the product. (And I cannot even
fathom why they would be any different than any other relationship.)

Thanks!
Joel

Hi Joel,
Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately Office XP and its earlier products are not supported now. Is
it possible for you to implement the same feature on SQL Server 2000
Northwind database? After that, you can send me
(changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com) a test copy of your database so that I can
get a clear view of the function and perform further research.

If it is hard for you to implement the same feature on Northwind database,
could you please send me some screenshots regarding the linked table and
the subset tabe when you open the linked table?

Look forward to your response.

Hi Charles,

I'm not sure I can send you anything useful. My problem is that I am not
able to get these linked-table relationships to work in dataset view in the
recent versions of Office, but existing relationships that were upgraded from
previous versions of Office before 2003 are working fine. You indicate that
you were able to reproduce this behavior...

You apparently already have an example that doesn't work, per your previous
message. I am unable to create a new one that DOES work... so what is left?

Hi Joel,
Thank you for your response.

I am sorry if I brought you any confusions. I did not want to get a not
working one, but would like to get a working one from your side. I wanted
to say that my tests at my side indicated that this feature was not
supported in Access 2003 and 2007, however you said that this feature
worked for a long time in the old version Access. That is why I wanted to
get a copy of your old version Access file based on SQL Server 2000
Northwind database or some screenshot so that I can compare closely with
the existing Access 2003/2007 files to see what the differences are here.
Then I could further communicate with our senior support team that is
closely supported by our product team.

Hope this clear your confusions. If you have any other questions or
concerns, please feel free to let me know. It is my pleasure to be of
assistance.

Best regards,
Charles Wang
