Hit Counter doesn't count

Two questions, really. I use FP2000 and this is my first experience building
a web page. When I publish hellscanyonchamber.com, my index.htm shows up with
no navigation bars. My web server opened file manager for me and showed me
how to upload just the index.htm from my computer. That fixes the navigation
bars, but the hit counter stays on 000001. I resorted to paying my $35 for
Microsoft support to straighten out earlier problems and the tech had me
publish the site to a back up file. Now two files show up in the html for the
index.htm file. Server says it's looking for these files: _vti_bin C:\program
files\common files\microsoft shared\webserver extensions\40 and
_VTI_BIN C:\windows\desktop\frontpage\pfiles\common\mshared\webservex\40
I found them by doing a "find files" on my hard drive. I'm scared to delete
these two files but I think they are the problem. Is it safe? I think it
would solve the hit counter problem.
For my navigation bars, I've printed out the html on the server side and am
trying to compare pages to see what might be different, but it's still a
foreign language.
I hope this isn't too long a question, but I'm at a standstill. Reading the
discussion threads has helped me fix some other problems I was having, so I
really appreciate you all.

The "server" looking for files on your c: drive means that you only had the page open when you
inserted the hit counter, not your website and then the page.
You *must* open FrontPage, then open your website, then open a page to edit it.

Do this, open the page as I described above, then remove the hit counter, save the page, reinsert
the hit counter, save the page and then publish.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I didn't know you could open a page without
opening the web first, so that's not the problem. I did remove the hit
counter, save, redo the counter, re-save, and publish. Several times.
I wonder if when the Microsoft Tech had me publish back to my hard drive for
a back up it picked up FP extensions from my server.
When I publish from FP and the home page comes up with no navigation bars,
the hit counter is fine. But to get the nav bars back, I have to load the
index.htm using the server's file manager. That's where it's picking up the
extra stuff that fouls up the hit counter.
I don't know why publishing from FP makes it forget the home page nav bars.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Sue

Ohhh! Lightening strikes. The real problem is the nav bars not showing up
when I publish from FP.
Loading the index page using the server's file manager is taking that page
off my hard drive.
So how do I get the index.htm to publish with it's nav bars intact?

Can you give a URL for the home page? Sometimes seeing what is published
helps diagnose problems.

Ronx, between Steve Easton's replies and Rob Giordano's, here's what I think
happened: Somehow the server has an "index.htm" (like my FP web) AND it has
an index.html. I don't know how the second index got there. But, I printed
out the html on both files and compared them. I see a few differences in the
two, the index.html has some language the other doesn't and no hit counter.
I think, when I pull my index.htm from my hard drive thru the server's file
manager that is equivalent to opening the page without having the web open
which Steve said was a no-no. I didn't realize that was what I was doing
since I never to that from FP.

Rob, I asked them why there were two index pages and they said I did it (like
I could have at my level of understanding). In FP, I only have index.htm.
When I used their free search engine registry it put meta tags in the
index.html version, so I guess that's what they're looking for (they told me
I had to choose).

Both versions on the server have lots more code than the html in FP. How
would I check the index.html to see what it looks like. If it's right, then
what?

I've thought of copying the html into FP, presuming I could figure out which
one to work from.

Ask your host what type of index page they *require* on the server.

Ok, I'm listening to Musak. Maybe I'll get a different tech. Last time I
asked they said "either one is ok"
Also, looking back thru the discussion strings I've printed out, I saw where
Steve Easton told someone to delete the FP temp files as well as cookies,
history, and internet temp files. So I followed those instructions and got
all that stuff out. Then republished. Same result. No nav bars on home page,
but hit counter perfect. Then to get the nav bars back, I uploaded the
index.htm file and the hit counter is still looking for files on my hard
drive. Grrrrrrr!
Cheers, Sue

Hi, I'm back. Here's what I've learned. Server is UNIX based and prefers
index.html. The tech worked with me (even though he's not supposed to talk
FP). He renamed both index pages on the server "old" and had me republish the
entire web. That's why you got the error. The index page did not publish.

He had me look in View, Reports (I didn't know to look there). index.htm and
index.htm.cnt say "Don't publish" Maybe that's been my problem all along.

How do I change it to publish?

Then, do I just rename my index.htm to index.html?

Thanks, Sue

I found a place where don't publish this page was checked, so I unchecked it.
Who knows how the check got in there. I republished changed pages and watched
as it showed the files being published. It said publishing home page as
index.html -- so FP is creating the second index page.

BUT, the nav bars are still gone. Any ideas other than loading the home page
from the server's file manager?

I'm giving up on the hit counter, but wonder what will happen if I try to
use any other components.

Thanks, Sue

I think I solved the problem by accident!
Server showed me how to get the stats I was trying to get with the hit
counter, so I generated a report there. When I went to save the report there
was a choice, save using FP. I did that and my web site came up with all
these stats added to it. I think I must have been "live" because both index
pages showed in my files list. The index.htm page just showed "add this page
to navigation view" so I deleted it, leaving just the index.htm that was
perfect. Then I saved and closed my web. Closed FP and reopened it and
reopened my web. It came up with only index.htm. With much trepidation, I
published the changed pages, having removed the hit counter. The publisher
asked me if I wanted to overwrite the index.htm and I said "no" just for
grins. It published perfectly!
Result, I don't know why, but it worked.
