Hit Counter Problem

I have installed a "Hit Counter" in FP2003 and published. my problem is that
the hit couner only appears after holding the mouse over where it should
normally appear.
I am using a "HitMeFP .gif image

Visible to me, but it does sometimes take a few (as many as 10, usually 5)
seconds to display. Mouseover makes no difference to the load time.

Any reason for the delay? I do not experience it on other sites I have
built, though I do then use FPs images.

I've noticed that a couple of times and it seems to be a random server issue.
I know for a fact it's "not" caused by the gif image HitMeFP generates
but I really don't know what causes it.
