Hit counter won't display

Hit counter won't display.
Shows outline with the red "x" and text shows "hit counter" in the outline
of the hit counter. Using one of the counter included with FP.

a hit counter is only visible when the website is published to a web server
with frontpage extensions installed, see other messages around,

Odd thing is that all the other components of the website work.. FP
template, buttons, fonts.......
