Hit Counter

Tried searching through and I know someone has to have had the same problem
as i am having..

Background: I have windows XP pro, ISS installed and front page 2003. Web
server is working fine and my front page web comes up okay.

Problem: I inserted a hit counter and saved to my server, index.htm page.
When I go and test the page I dont get the picture of the hit counter.
however I see the square box. What did I forget to do? and how do i correct
the problem if it can be corrected? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.

The counter requires the FrontPage extensions. Check with your host that
they support these. If the extensions are working and in place correctly you
need to publish with HTTP not FTP else you risk corrupting the extension
files (requiring a reinstall of the FPSE).

Does the server have FrontPage extensions installed? These are required
for the hit counter.

" saved to my server " - how did you save? Copied to the wwwroot folder
from elsewhere? Or saved as part of an open website by FrontPage, or
Published? With the first method the hit counter will fail.

I am pretty sure when I installed IIS I installed the frontpage extensions,
Also, I host my own web server which I have physical access. I will check the
extensions. I run Frontpage from another computer on the Lan and have the
web directory mapped. That may be a problem with publishing. Im not sure.

Thanks.

That will be the problem. A hit counter in a disc based web site
(mapped drive/folder is a disc based site in FrontPage) will have
different code than a hit counter in a server based site (opened in
FrontPage using http://server/). Publishing from one to the other
changes the code in the process.

Open the website as a server based site, and run Tools->Recalculate
Hyperlinks - that may fix it.

Thanks Ronx,

I went ahead and did the recalculate but it didn't do any good. I get the
box with the frame around it still with the little white box with a red x and
the word "hit counter" when I bring it up in explorer. I did however get a
hit counter to work with it but it was from one of those free sites that
gives you the html code that you can paste in a hit counter. I checked my
server extensions and there installed but its the frontpage extensions that
come with windows xp. Wish I could get the frontpage hit counter to work but
I may be stuck with using the html code.

Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.
