Hit Counters

I'm having problems with the counter keeping track. Sometimes things happen
and the counter is reset. Since I don't want it to start over, I will try
to reset it to the approximate number of visitors. It still does not work.
I have removed it from the site then added it back again. When I try to set
it to 5061 (example), it does not take. It is currently at 3 and counting.

This has happened before. On a few occasions, I've deleted it from the
server, then published. That has worked, leaving me to wonder what else that
does not update. This trick is not working now. I can't reset the counter
at all.

Open the site directly on the server in FP, then open _private and look for the pagename.htm.cnt
file, open in notepad and then set the correct number, do not change the number of digits.

Thomas,
I've removed the web counter from my site but I still want to keep track of
the numbers of vistors. I've followed what you say with regards
pagename.htm.cnt but I can't open the page on the server. I'm using FP
2003 - I connect to the server as if I was publishing, I double-click to
open the _private folder, I then right-click on the file on the remote
web-site side but I don't have the option to open in NotePad. Even if I
double-click it the file won't open.
Any suggestions why I can't access the file on the remote server?

You must open the site using File Menu | Open Site, then open _private, select the file, then right
click and Open With Notepad or Text Editor.

I went to index.htm.cnt. I could not edit either. I copied it to my local
computer, edit it, sent it back to the server. That did not work.

Could it have something to do with the fact that the hit counter is on a
page that is being included as the the bottom boarder (bottom.htm). If so,
I may of edited the wrong pagename.htm.cnt. I have a folder labeled
IncludeItems (which contains anything that gets included using the component
include. That folder does not have a cnt folder in it.

Any other suggestion. Maybe I never changed the correct one..somehow.

Never mind. I figureed it out. I had to delete the one on the server and
publish the one from my local computer. That was the only way I could get
it to work. Typically these are set "Not to Publish" You have to
temorarily reset that while you create and send a copy over.

Thanks for your input. I would not of been able to figure that out without
you help.

Glad to hear you got it solved.

However you should have been able to do this directly on the live site in FP.

I got a message saying that I don't have permissions to open that file.
Interesting, since I was able to delete it and then replace it.
Thanks again
